The Bass Lake Beach was recently closed by the state sanitarian who said the beach lacked the proper safety emergency devices required for the beach to be in operation. The owners of the beach were given until July 19 to get the issue resolved, but it’s possible the issue has already been taken care of and the beach is in compliance.
In response to this issue and the prevalence of other problems with the beach, the Starke County Commissioners this week discussed the possibility of creating a Park and Recreation Board. Commissioner Kathy Norem asked Auditor Kay Chaffins to check with other auditors in the area to find out more about the idea.
In addition, the county is currently waiting on word from the DNR concerning the old submerged diving platform in Bass Lake that has residents concerned for their safety while swimming. Norem said they are currently waiting on a phone call from the new DNR representative for the Starke County area to learn whether or not the department would mark the platform to allow it to be removed in the future.
