The Bass Lake Festival Pageant will kick off today, with the Little Miss/Mister contest starting at 4 p.m. followed by the Miss Bass Lake contest at 6 p.m. The pageants will take place at the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association building, and Dana White, pageant coordinator, said she’s excited to start her third year coordinating the pageant, which has been a staple of the Bass Lake community since 1926.
This year, however, will be a little smaller than years past. White said five teenagers will vie for the title of Miss Bass Lake, while three girls and two boys will compete for the Little Miss and Little Mister titles. Last year, White said seven teenagers competed, with 11 girls and six boys as well.
White said the event is always entertaining, especially when it comes to the little ones.
“The audience can expect to hear some hilarious answers. The MC – which is Tom Berg from WKVI – will ask a few questions, and it’s always interesting to hear the responses that come out of their mouths; it’s like Kids Say the Darnedest Things,” said White.
Contestants for the title of Miss Bass Lake will be judged on a speech about themselves and what they’re involved in, as well as three dress stages and two questions. White said the first round will feature the teenagers in a festival shirt and shorts as they introduce themselves. After that, she said, the theme wear comes into play.
“Our theme this year for the festival is ‘The Good Life,’ so I told them they need to wear an outfit that represents the good life to them. So it could be either a future career, it could be someone they aspire to be like, or they could get creative and think outside the box,” said White.
Following that is formal wear, when the girls will be asked a standard question and a random question drawn from a hat.
