The LaPorte City Police Department will be participating in Operation Pull Over Blitz 77. The enforcement, called Safe Family Travel, began Friday and will run through Dec. 1.
The department has 184 hours of special impaired and seat belt patrols scheduled during this blitz period.
This blitz was specially planned around the Thanksgiving holiday which is one of the busiest travel times of the year. Safe Family Travel is an annual enforcement effort that combines high-visibility seat belt and impaired driving patrols. The LaPorte City Police Department is one of 250 state and local law enforcement agencies that receive federal highway safety funding from Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in order to participate in this blitz.
Statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggest that the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent when seat belts are worn correctly.
Watch for checkpoints and other police patrols this coming holiday.
