The old town dump operated by the town of Winamac decades ago is finally a thing of the past, according to Town Manager Jim Conner. He said the council this week received a “no further action” letter from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management regarding the dump, stating that the town no longer has to perform testing, monitoring or cleanup at the site.
Conner said it is a relief to finally be done with the project that has been taking place for more than seven years. Now, he said, the town knows they don’t have to dig it all up and take it to a certified landfill, taking a weight off of the minds of town officials.
The council also received a grant from the Northwest Indiana Solid Waste District to purchase picnic tables in the town park, Conner explained. They will purchase 10 tables at a total cost of around $6000.
