Road crews for the Indiana Department of Transportation are ready to tackle heavy lake effect snow predicted in the Northern Indiana area.
The National Weather Service has issued a lake effect snow watch this morning through this afternoon with total accumulations of three to six inches in the Starke County area. Locally higher amounts are possible within a narrow but intense lake effect snow band starting this morning. Blowing and drifting snow will be possible with winds up to 20 mph.
Parts of Lake and Porter County could see 12”+ of new snow over the next 24 hours. Surrounding counties could see 6”+ of new snow during that time.
Motorists should expect difficult driving conditions, and should avoid nonessential travel. Always give snow plow drivers room to safely do their work, adjust speed according to weather and road conditions, don’t follow too closely, and brake early and slowly.
