Construction of the addition to the Knox Elementary School is expected to begin within 30 days, Dana J. Wannemacher, vice president Barton Coe Vilamaa, architects and engineers, reported to the Knox School Board last night. Weather and scheduling were cited as contributing to about a month’s delay in breaking ground. The board approved details of the kitchen and cafeteria area and equipment.
Students and parents attended the meeting when Student Council members of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade elementary school gave a community service report in the “Spotlight on Success” portion of the agenda. The 3rd grade project raised $150 for Riley Children’s Hospital; the 4th grade project raised $270 to send “care packages” to active military personnel; and the 5th grade raised $292 for the Starke County Humane Society. The 5th grade students also volunteered their time at the Humane Society on March 20th. The students who gave verbal reports were presented “certificates of speaking” by Mr. Barnes.
Other business included Board approval of new hires, a maternity leave, and extracurricular resignations and appointments. Also approved were a renewals of the athletic insurance program and the Simplex building protection and safety contract.
