Police officers across the country and close to home will be on the lookout for drivers and passengers who aren’t buckled up. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, LaPorte Police Department and Indiana State Police are among the agencies taking part in the Click It or Ticket enforcement blitz that starts today.
“Wearing your seat belt can increase your chance of surviving a crash by more than 50 percent,” LaPorte Police Captain Tom Heath says. “This campaign provides us the opportunity to increase that conversation and focus patrols toward unrestrained driving. We want to remind drivers and their occupants, if we see you unbelted, we will pull you over.”
Over the next two weeks, officers and troopers will be on the lookout around the clock for violators. . Federal funding for the initiative is provided through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. In 2014, 748 fatalities occurred on Indiana roadways. Nearly one-third involved victims who were not wearing seat belts, according to ICJI statistics.
