EF-1 Tornado Confirmed in Starke County

The National Weather Service confirms an EF-1 tornado, with a maximum 95 mile-per-hour wind speed, struck western Starke County Sunday evening.

The funnel cloud touched down briefly two miles south of English Lake. It uprooted or snapped between four and five dozen trees in a yard in the 6250 block of 400 South and destroyed a shed. Most of the houses along that stretch of roadway lost shingles or pieces of roofing. A garage on 400 south between 600 and 650 west was shifted on its foundation. No injuries were reported. National Weather Service surveyors attribute the extensive damage in that isolated area to the combination of the storm’s slow forward motion and the sandy soil in the area.
