Fundraising efforts for the annual Starke County Independence Day celebration are underway. The event will have all the usuals; food, fun and of course, fire-works. Culver Introduces Water Rate Ordinance
The Town of Culver is now turning its attention to adopting an amended water rate ordinance.
During a special meeting Tuesday night, the Culver Town Council introduced the language – which will likely be approved in mid-June. Culver is working to upgrade its water treatment facility, the costs of which call for an increase in water rates.

Healthy Challenge Series Crosses First Goal Finish LIne
The checkered flag has dropped on the first Moving Starke County Forward Healthy Challenge Series goal. Participants were charged with notching 250 exercise miles from May 11th through the 29th. The theme is NASCAR, so the first goal was billed as the Daytona 250. Participants lapped that and then some, logging more than 700 miles. Continue reading
Starke County Youth Club Honors IU Health Starke Hospital
IU Health Starke Hospital’s investment in the youth of the community has earned them recognition from the Starke County Youth Club. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi presented IU Health Starke Hospital President Craig Felty the Aim High Award in recognition of the hospital’s top pledge of $5,000 during the recent radiothon. The daylong fundraiser on WKVI raised $41,000 for the club. It provides after school and summer enrichment programs for students from Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis schools at sites throughout the county. Continue reading
Freedom Riders Honor Veterans, Raise Money
Community Services of Starke County received a generous donation thanks to a group compassionate horseback riders called the Freedom Riders. Over Memorial Day weekend, the group traveled from one end of the county to the other, passing through each cemetery on route. Continue reading

Exhibitors Showcase Pygmy Goats During Weekend Fairgrounds Event
The 4-H Fairgrounds will be covered with goats this weekend.
Around 15 exhibitors, mostly from Indiana, will be showing pygmy goats. The event will take place Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning in Hamlet.

Starke County Tops Voter Turnout in May Primary
The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office says Starke County had the highest voter turnout in the state during the May municipal primary election.
Connie Lawson released her office’s Voter Turnout Report earlier this week, indicating 12-percent of the 2.6-million eligible voters cast a ballot in the Hoosier State.
Starke County Receives Favorable Bridge Inspection Report
Starke County’s bridges are in good shape overall, according to a recently completed inspection. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler says no new bridges were deemed structurally deficient. Repairs are continuing on the bridges identified three years ago. Continue reading
Bid Process Nearing For Fuel System Modernization
Arens Field is getting closer to the bid process for work to its fuel aviation system.
Talks have been ongoing for about a year to remedy the underground fuel tanks and modernize the system, itself. The Pulaski County Commissioners were updated on work planned for the site.

Marshall County Fire Training Facility Receives Conditional Approval
A fire training facility received conditional approval from the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday morning.
The site has been in the works for some time, but plans are to move forward with construction for firefighter, police, and EMS training opportunities. The training tower recently received a recommendation from the Marshall County Jail Holding Corporation to host the site on the jail property adjacent to the employee parking lot.

Culver Council Approves Bond Ordinance for Water Treatment Facility
The Culver Town Council has taken another step toward upgrading its water treatment facility.
During a special meeting on Tuesday night, an ordinance that allows a bond issuance to take place was considered. Culver is in the process of undertaking a $1.6-million upgrade to its water treatment facility. Fees and other expenses put the project in the $2.2-million range.

LaPorte Police Department Announces Click It or Ticket Results
Officers from the LaPorte Police Department wrote 141 tickets for lack of seatbelt usage and 10 for lack of child restraint usage during a recent Click It or Ticket campaign. The 17-day enforcement period wrapped up over the weekend. LaPorte Police wrote a total of 197 citations and issued 118 warnings for things like texting, motorcycle license violations, driving while suspended, no driver’s license, speeding and other traffic violations. Officers also made two drunk driving arrests, according to a news release. Continue reading

Ongoing Wheel Tax Discussions Endorsed by Pulaski Commissioners
A wheel tax has been recommended for further consideration in Pulaski County.
The fee – assessed annually against motorists during their license plate renewal – has been discussed for a few weeks in area counties to improve and maintain roads. The Pulaski County Commissioners considered the item prior to a joint meeting with the County Council next week.
