USDA Approves State’s Request for Secretarial Disaster Declaration
Farmers throughout the state who suffered crop losses due to excessive rainfall can apply for low-interest emergency loans from the federal government. The U.S. Department of Agriculture yesterday approved a secretarial disaster declaration for 53 of Indiana’s 92 counties. Gov. Mike Pence, Lt. Gov. Sue Ellsperman and Indiana Farm Service Agency Executive Director Julia A. Wickard made the request in late July after farmers suffered significant crop damage and losses as a result of flooding and excessive rain that started May 1st. Continue reading

Former Veterans Service Officer Seeks Hearing, Reinstatement
Former Starke County Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner contends the county commissioners denied him his due process and violated his constitutional right to free speech by not allowing him to speak during a recent meeting. Turner was fired during the June 15th commissioners meeting. He filed a grievance against the commissioners for wrongful termination, claiming President Kent Danford never gave him any oral or written warning about any improper actions. Turner also asked for a list of veterans who have complained about his job performance. The commissioners conducted an executive session grievance hearing with Turner and upheld their action during their July 6th meeting, citing his status as an at-will employee. Continue reading
Starke County Emergency Responders Receive Overdose Training
Starke County Emergency responders are now better equipped to deliver treatment to possible overdose victims.
According to Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin, deputies, EMT’s, and firefighters attended training earlier this month to administer Naloxone. The product is considered to be a fast-acting measure to help reverse the affects of drug overdose.
Judge Accepts Plea, Sentences Criminal Confinement Defendant
The Knox man who handcuffed and shackled his wife to their coffee table while wielding a knife was sentenced to 10 years in prison, despite the victim’s protest that his punishment is too harsh. Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall accepted a plea from 37-year-old Benny Giselbach to charges of escape, criminal confinement and resisting arrest. All three stem from an April 15th incident at his Bass Lake area home. Continue reading

Memorial Bench Approved for former Eastern Pulaski Superintendent
The Eastern Pulaski School Corporation campus will soon have a new bench commemorating the memory of former Superintendent Harry Cords. At the school board meeting Monday evening, one item on the agenda was to approve a $750 donation from the Cords family. Culver Slows Down Annexation Discussion
The Town of Culver distributed 28 surveys to landowners asking their thoughts on a possible annexation. Only six provided a positive response.
Plans were initially to annex land to the Northwest of Culver. By annexing land, Culver could increase its assessed value and population, but also gain space for future development.

Knox School Board Reaffirms Support for Programs
With the meeting room packed with parents, teachers, and band and athletic fans, the Knox School Board, late yesterday afternoon, assured those patrons it had no intent to “do away” with any particular extracurricular activity in its 2016 budget cutting efforts.
Social media had been reporting all day that budget support of certain programs was scheduled to be drastically reduced or completely removed from the schedule of activities at the scheduled work session.

Pulaski County Desires Time Frame for Radioville Bowling Alley Demolition
A building ordered to be demolished in Radioville remains standing.
The former bowling alley was ordered to be demolished by December 30th of 2014 after the roof caved in. Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare said at the time that the structure could not be salvaged.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Unanimously Approves Roofing Contract Proposal
During their meeting Monday evening, the Eastern Pulaski School Board unanimously approved a a roofing contract with Insley Systems Inc. Gibraltar Design Inc. has been the main construction consultant for the corporation during their building renovations. Certain projects are out of Gibraltar’s wheel house so they make recommendations for special projects. They submitted a proposal to the board for Insley to tackle the roofing project. NIPSCO Reminds Customers to Call Before Digging
NIPSCO reminds anyone with outdoor plans that involve digging to call 811 before doing so. Officials say digging into underground lines is the biggest risk to NIPSCO’s gas system and the leading cause of damage. So-called “blind digging” damages an underground utility line every six minutes, according to Common Ground Alliance. Striking an underground line can harm you and others, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood and potentially result in fines and repair costs. Continue reading

Pulaski County Council Finalizes Full-Time Designation for IT Position
Pulaski County may soon have a full-time IT professional.
Following a recommendation by the Pulaski County Commissioners, the County Council met Monday evening with the Commissioners in joint session to potentially finalize the matter. The County currently contracts the Information Technology position, but the individual holding the contract gave notice the service would no longer be provided under contract prices.
