A caucus was held Wednesday night at the VFW in Knox to select a new candidate for the job. Filling the position during a special caucus was needed following the resignation former Coroner Adam Gray – who cited personal and professional reasons behind the move.

Informational Website Launched for N.J.-S.P. School Referendum

BluejayVoters who live within the North Judson-San Pierre School District can learn more about the corporation’s proposed general fund referendum by visiting a new website. www.njspfundourfuture.com explains the rationale behind the push for a property tax increase. Corporation officials say it’s necessary due to what they’ve described as a perfect storm of declining enrollment and changes in the way the state funds schools. Former Starke Sheriff Sentenced for Invasion of Privacy

 A former Starke County elected official was sentenced Tuesday on charges of Invasion of Privacy.

Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman was serving as a special prosecutor in the case. He says the incident occurred in March of this year after former Starke County Sheriff Oscar Cowen allegedly traveled to his former wife’s workplace in Hamlet. The action violated a previously authorized protective order.

Area Counties See Declines in Unemployment

  
 

Unemployment in Starke County declined slightly from July to August, according to the latest job numbers released by the state. All but one county saw decreases in unemployment rates. Starke County dropped from 5.8 to 5.5 percent. That’s still higher than the state average unemployment of 4.6 percent or the national 5.1 percent jobless figure. Continue reading

Hoping to develop successful careers as adults, students from Knox High school and some from the 8th grade will be meeting with college representatives and counselors today at the “Fall Career Fair.” Tomorrow junior high school students will participate in a “mini college fair” during the lunch periods. Culver Town Council Brings Budget to First Reading

The Culver Town Council has taken a step toward adopting their 2016 budget.

During last night’s meeting, a public hearing was held to review the document that will determine expenditures for the next year. As things stand, Culver sees modest increases in spending for its police and fire department budgets. The biggest jump was a projected $100-thousand increase in EMS expenses.
