Starke County Students to Attend Third Annual Manufacturers Day

Seventh graders from around Starke County will get a look at the local manufacturing industry. October 8 is the third annual Manufacturers Day celebration, sponsored by the Starke County Economic Development Foundation.

Students from Oregon-Davis, North Judson-San Pierre, and Knox will gather at the Knox Middle School to meet with representatives from manufacturing companies as well as the Starke County Initiative for Lifelong Learning. Each company will have a display showing what they make, what kinds of jobs they have, and what skills and training each job requires. Students will each get a word search puzzle, which they will solve as they learn about each company. They will also be given items to take home as well as a brochure highlighting SCILL and each of the manufacturers.

Organizers with the Starke County Economic Foundation say the goal of the event is to make sure students know about the opportunities available in their home county, as well as the education and skills required for them to work for one of the companies. It’s also a way for the foundation to help meet manufacturers’ demands for workers with the right skills.

They chose seventh graders so that students can use what they learn at the event to help them choose their high school classes the following year.
