The Culver Town Council has an opportunity to bring itself in line with a recently established practice in Marshall County, tonight.

According to their agenda, Culver will bring an “Unsafe Buildings” ordinance to second and third reading. The ordinance passed first reading earlier this month.

The language creates a timely path to remedy properties deemed unsafe by the Marshall County, or local, building inspectors. A hearing board is established under the language consisting of building experts and representatives of the community where the property resides.

Talks about unsafe buildings have taken place in Marshall County for a couple of months, but have been deemed a positive step based on the few properties that have gone through the process.

Marshall County said it desired a review process that would speed-up a demolition or repair process that, in the past, could take more than one year in the courts. At the time, officials with Marshall County stated their desire to have individual communities adopt similar ordinances, thus making it applicable across-the-board.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. EDT at Culver Town Hall.
