Plans are in the works to add a Head Start classroom at West Central Elementary. The school board is finalizing a two-year contract to offer pre-kindergarten on the west side of Pulaski County, with a fall startup anticipated.
West Central Superintendent Don Street says the program will be in a self-contained area of the building with separate restroom and playground facilities. Classes will meet each Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Street anticipates enrolling up to 20 4-year-olds based on responses from area families. He says Head Start is a good feeder for kindergarten and helps youngsters learn to interact with their peers in a structured setting.
West Central’s recent Kindergarten Round-Up drew 44 students.
