Driver Airlifted After Single-Car Rollover Wreck

Authorities in LaPorte County believe alcohol was a factor in an early morning single-vehicle crash on a rural highway. Sheriff’s deputies were notified at 1:21 a.m. of the accident on State Road 2 near County Road 450 East. When they arrived, they found a green 1990 Honda Accord upside down in the westbound lanes. The driver, 27-year-old Joseph M. Hyduk of rural LaPorte County was partially ejected and pinned between the car and the roadway. Firefighters from Kankakee Township freed him, and he was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Investigators believe the Accord was eastbound on State Road 2, left the roadway, went through the median and hit an embankment. It went airborne before hitting the ground, rolling several times and landing on its roof in the middle of the westbound lanes.

Alcohol test results are pending. The driver’s condition is not known.
