Today is Halloween, and some state agencies are offering some tips to keep trick-or-treaters safe. The Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana State Police, and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute are asking drivers to be on the lookout for kids near roadways.
Drivers are being asked to slow down and yield to young pedestrians. Also, be careful around other vehicles that may be dropping off children, communicate with other drivers by using turn signals or hazard lights, and don’t use your mobile phone while driving.
Meanwhile, trick-or-treaters and their parents are reminded to prevent trips and falls by keeping costumes short, use face paint instead of masks to make it easier to see, and wear light colors or reflective clothing. Parents are also asked to make sure children only stop at familiar homes with their outside lights on, never enter the homes of strangers, either trick or treat while it’s still light out or take flashlights, and only cross at crosswalks, when possible. Never allow children to eat any of their treats until they get home and parents have a chance to inspect them.
Additionally, state officials encourage trick-or-treaters to follow local trick-or-treat hours. Trick-or-treating takes place from 5:00 to 7:00 EDT this evening in Winamac, Culver, Walkerton, and Kewanna. In Knox, trick-or-treat hours are 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. CDT, while in North Judson, it will run from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. CDT. Hamlet’s trick-or-treat hours are 6:00 to 7:30 CDT.
