The West Central School Corporation is focusing on improving English and writing skills, after getting the results of the 2016 ISTEP.
The ISTEP scores were presented to the school board Thursday. Superintendent Don Street says the corporation continues to break down the data, and both the Elementary and Middle/High School principals will be reviewing that information with their staffs.
Meanwhile, they’re implementing a few programs to help address some of the areas of concern. “We have the Step Up to Writing program in middle school, and that’s been expanded to the high school,” Street says. “It’s a particular program designed for writing and comprehension. It’s also been taken down to the fifth grade.”
Street says the writing program is just one of the things included in the school improvement plans. “At the elementary level, we have a new math program, so they’re continuing to focus on that,” he says. “They’re also focusing in on attendance at the elementary level. Our attendance rate has been good, but all attendance could improve, so they made some efforts in those areas.”
The improvement plans for each school were approved by the school board Thursday.
