Pulaski County Historical Society to Host Silent Movie Screening

The Pulaski County Historical Society is hosting a screening this week of a movie regarded as one of the greatest of all time, complete with live theater organ accompaniment.

The Buster Keaton silent film “The General” will be shown Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. EST at the Vurpillat Opera House in downtown Winamac. No admission will be charged, but donations will be accepted. Concessions will be available, and attendees may bring their own comfortable chair if they choose. Folding chairs will be available.

The 1926 action/adventure/comedy silent film runs 67 minutes. It was inspired by “The Great Locomotive Chase,” which is a true story of an event that occurred during the Civil War. Union soldiers boarded a train in Marietta, Ga., uncoupled the passenger cars and took control of the locomotive called “The General” and three freight cars. They ran the train more than 100 miles while cutting telegraph wires and destroying tracks while being pursued by the original crew and Confederate soldiers.
