N.J.-S.P. Drama Department Staging “The Sound of Music”

The high school auditorium on the North Judson-San Pierre campus will be filled with the drama department’s rendition of The Sound of Music this weekend.

Director Donna Ness said the presentation hasn’t been on the local stage in over 10 years and she wanted to bring the familiar musical back once again for the community’s entertainment. She added that the community can enjoy better acoustics and stage presence with it being presented in the larger auditorium rather than the previous cafetorium setting.

The Sound of Music is set in Austria in 1938 and focuses on the lives of Maria and Captain von Trapp and his children. Maria assumes the role of Governess of the household while contemplating becoming a nun. They face a crisis when they decide they need to flee the country to avoid the Nazis, but not before performing in the local festival.

Several familiar songs are featured, including “The Sound of Music”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “My Favorite Things” and “Do-Re-Mi”.

There are three opportunities to catch the play this weekend. Opening night is tonight where nearly 30 students in the production will take to the stage at 6:30 p.m. The play is offered again Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. Adult tickets are $6.00 and students are $4.00. Preschool students are free.
