Deadline Looms for Knox Property Owner

The owner of a dilapidated house in downtown Knox will present final renovation plans to the Knox Board of Works when they meet tomorrow morning. Lucia Valladares will also provide an update on the property cleanup at 6 N. Pearl Street. She told the board at their March meeting it would take between three and four weeks.

The vacant was previously slated for demolition after the Knox Board of Works upheld an order last June to tear it down.

After doing so, members learned it had been purchased a tax sale by an out-of-state resident who was attempting to obtain a deed for the property. They agreed to her request to delay enforcement until that process was finished and gave her until March of 2017 to come up with plans to rehabilitate the structure.

Valladares shared architectural plans with the board last month and says she intends to bring the structure up to current codes and address foundation issues. Last month Mayor Dennis Estok advised her to have the necessary contractors lined up to get the work done within six months.

The Knox Board of Works is also expected to waive water, sewer and building fees for the Starke-Pulaski Habitat for Humanity house that’s scheduled for construction on Prettyman Street. Their meeting starts tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at Knox City Hall.
