LaPorte County will soon be getting a new hospital in a familiar location. Site selectors vetted more than 20 locations before deciding to construct the new $125 million facility on the site of the current LaPorte Hospital at 1007 Lincolnway.
CEO Ashley Dickinson says it’s the ideal location to provide high quality, compassionate care to the communities the hospital serves.
Groundbreaking is expected early next year, with a grand opening anticipated in 2020.
Dickinson says the site selection committee considered suitability of land, traffic patterns, ease of access, proximity to the newest EMS station, central accessibility for the hospital’s service area, visibility and economic development and vitality.
The timing of the announcement is also significant, as it was 50 years ago this month when Ben Bortz announced a hospital would be built on the site where the building currently stands.
The design is currently being finalized, but LaPorte Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman Mark Kosior says the community can expect a five-story, 200,000 square foot building. He adds it will be designed to accommodate future growth and will also include a medical office building.
Dickinson believes the new facility will help LaPorte Hospital attract and retain physicians and other providers.
The current hospital will remain operational while the new one is under construction. Details and renderings will be released as they are finalized. Visit newlaportehospital.com for project updates as details are released. Community members will also be able to submit questions about the project.
