Pulaski County Council Approves Funding for Paving Project, Additional Court Expenses

The Pulaski County Highway Department is looking to pave some streets in the Star City and Pulaski areas.

Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff told the county council Monday the project received a matching grant through last year’s Community Crossings program. But since the work wasn’t able to be done last year, the county council approved the transfer of just over $39,000 to do it now.

Funding was also approved for repairs to the highway department’s salt storage building. Council members voted to transfer $4,000 the department had left over in this year’s salt budget into the building and structures line item.

Meanwhile, Pulaski Superior and Circuit courts continue to find themselves short on funds. Judge Michael Shurn is temporarily overseeing Superior Court in addition to his usual duties in Circuit Court. He said Monday some challenges have come up in the Superior Court Budget, and he plans to request an additional appropriation of $19,000 to cover a shortfall in the supplemental public defender fund.

Meanwhile, a shuffling of money continues in the Circuit Court budget. The county council approved a transfer of $2,500 from the witness fees to the examination of prisoners line item. That’s after a $7,000 transfer was approved last month.

Back in March, Shurn said Circuit Court has been racking up higher-than-expected fees for court-appointed psychiatrists used to help determine if defendants are competent to stand trial. To help replenish the witness fees line item, the county council approved a $17,000 additional appropriation this week.
