Mowing crews from the Starke County Highway Department are making their first pass of the year. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners Monday six mowing tractors and two brush choppers are actively clearing rights of way.
He says keeping vegetation under control helps with roadway safety. Ritzler notes the county has seen a 50 percent decrease in accidents since stepping up efforts to improve visibility at intersections.
He acknowledges receiving complaints about how things look after the brush choppers go through but says the appearance improves after about two weeks.
