The Knox City Council hopes to soon consider an ordinance to levy heavy fines for illegal dumping. Mayor Dennis Estok says someone is regularly bringing bags full of animal waste to the park and placing them in the trash cans. He says each bag contains between 20 and 30 pounds of waste.
Additionally the city continues to struggle with people leaving non-recyclable items at the recycling bin behind city hall. Even though there are cameras in use, they haven’t proven to be an effective deterrent for the dumping of furniture, tires, television sets and other bulky items.
Estok told the city council Tuesday the street department is tired of cleaning up the mess. He hopes establishing and enforcing fines will address the problem.
The council will consider an ordinance to do just that at a future meeting.
