Starke County Youth Club Radiothon to Raise Money, Awareness of After School Programs

Residents can invest in the future of Starke County by making a contribution to the Starke County Youth Club. They’re taking over the WKVI airwaves today for their annual radiothon fundraiser. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says tax-deductible contributions to the local nonprofit can help make changes happen in our community by helping youngsters to find success. The Starke County Youth Club provides after school and summer programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade at Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis Schools. Szakonyi adds all money invested in the Starke County Youth Club stays in the community.

A significant part of the club’s funding comes from the state through a federally-funded grant. Szakonyi says money is not included in President Trump’s proposed budget. She encourages Starke County residents to reach out to their representatives and discuss the importance of after school programs.

“Kids who attend our programs long term improve their grades. They improve their performance on standardized tests. Kids long term with club improve their work habits. They have better social skills. They’re more likely to volunteer. They get along better with others.”

Szakonyi adds the Starke County Youth Club provides a valuable services for local youngsters and their families.

“Over 60 percent of our kids have all available parents in the workforce. They don’t have someone at home to help them when the school day ends. It is a critical need for those kids to have a safe place to go where they can continue to learn.”
