Winamac’s park department is getting a boost from some local volunteers. Last month’s Town Park cleanup day organized by the park board’s advisory council attracted more than 55 people who put in a combined 214 hours of work, according to organizers.
Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo told the park board Thursday that volunteers planted trees and flowers, cut down some trees, and removed several loads of sticks. “I want to thank all the volunteers who showed up and the advisory committee for organizing it,” he said. “Several weeks of work got done in a matter of a few hours, and I truly appreciate it.”
Park board member Chris Schramm also acknowledged ProscapeS Unlimited for donating their time, effort, and equipment to help with the park cleanup. On top of that, Austin Felty, who has been working on adding trees to the Winamac Parkway as part of an Eagle Scout project, has offered to take care of the newly-planted trees in the town park for the next few months, as well.
Also during Thursday’s park board meeting, it was announced that Winamac Town Attorney Justin Schramm will offer his services to the park board free of charge from now on. “I figure the thousand extra dollars you budget for my services a year can be better put elsewhere,” he said. “You guys are all donating your time, so why not I?” Park board members decided last year to forego compensation for themselves.
