La Porte County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for the suspect in a bicycle hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning.
Police received a call about the crash just before 7:30 a.m. CT saying that a person driving a “green truck” was seen leaving the scene after hitting Gregory L. Thompson, 56, of New Carlisle, traveling east on State Road 2 in La Porte County.
Police believe Thompson was thrown a distance from his bicycle upon impact. He was flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend after sustaining critical injuries. Thompson was wearing a helmet. Sheriff’s investigators and crash reconstructionists continue to gather evidence in the incident. The eastbound lanes of State Road 2 were closed for a few hours to conduct an investigation.
Kankakee Township firefighters, La Porte City firefighters, La Porte County EMS and Med Flight assisted La Porte County Sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
