The Town of Winamac will soon get a visit from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to see if the town’s swimming pool rebuilding project deserves grant funding. A site visit is scheduled for Thursday, July 13, according to Park Board Secretary Kim Burke.

She told board members last week the tour will include the Community Wellness Center of Winamac, which would house the pool’s locker rooms. Before the site visit, town officials plan to meet with Wellness Center Director Mike Banta and check the facility’s ADA compliance.

Burke also said the DNR has requested a few changes and additions to the town’s grant application, since the paperwork was submitted late last month. “They wanted me to fill out the application differently because I was showing we have too much money,” she explained.

Winamac is applying for up to $200,000 in matching money from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The new pool is expected to cost between $500,000 and $600,000. So far, nearly $300,000 has been pledged through private donations, town funding, and other grants.
