Pulaski County Blight Elimination Efforts Continue, In Spite of Delays

Pulaski County is moving ahead with efforts to tear down a dilapidated Medaryville home. Back in April, the county commissioners approved a purchase agreement for the house formerly owned by Don Foust.

This week, Building Inspector Doug Hoover told the commissioners that the process is taking a bit longer than expected. “Hopefully, around the first of July, we’re going to start asking for some bids on tearing it down,” he said. “Every time we think we’ve just got everything going, a wrench gets thrown in it. The other day, we thought we had all our paperwork, what they told us, and then all of a sudden they come back and say you’ve got until today to get this other paperwork in. So it’s just one problem after another, but it’ll all come together.”

The county has gotten a $25,000 blight elimination grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. Once the house is torn down, the county plans to donate the land to Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity to potentially build a new home on the site.

Meanwhile, Hoover is also working on getting another Medaryville property cleaned up, after its former owner reportedly left behind large amounts of garbage when he passed away over two years ago. Hoover told the commissioners this week he’s gotten some information and passed it along to County Attorney Kevin Tankersley for review.
