ISP Investigating Police-Involved Shooting That May Have Injured LaPorte Man in Michigan City

A police-involved shooting in Michigan City is being investigated by Indiana State Police. Investigators say it happened around 3:30 Sunday morning in the 400 block of Pleasant Avenue.

A Michigan City Police officer allegedly shot at a Chevrolet Suburban that was reportedly speeding toward the officer and another officer. The other officer was impounding a vehicle at the time, following a vehicle and foot pursuit that ended in a drunk driving arrest, according to state police.

The occupant of the Suburban, Merwin A. Coleman, 29, of LaPorte, was treated at Franciscan Health in Michigan City for a graze wound to his arm. However, police don’t know if the wound came from the officer-involved shooting, or another shooting reported a few minutes earlier a couple blocks away.

State Police say a home near Pleasant Avenue and Rose Street was struck by the Michigan City Police officer’s gunfire, but no one in the home was injured. At least one unoccupied car was damaged by bullets in the earlier shooting.

The police officer who fired the shots has been placed on administrative leave.
