ISP Releases Name of Michigan City Police Officer Involved in Weekend Shooting

Michigan City Police Patrolman Nick Baker

Indiana State Police have released the name of a Michigan City Police officer who allegedly shot at a speeding Chevrolet Suburban Sunday morning. Patrolman Nick Baker reportedly began shooting when the Suburban was heading toward him and another officer at a high rate of speed.

The occupant of the Suburban, Merwin A. Coleman, 29, of LaPorte, was treated at Franciscan Health in Michigan City for a graze wound to his arm. However, police didn’t know initially if Coleman was injured by Baker’s bullet or from another shooting reported a few minutes earlier a couple blocks away.

State Police say Baker was hired in November of 2015 and is assigned to the midnight shift. Baker’s been placed on paid administrative leave while State Police investigate.
