Pulaski County Courtroom Ready to Reopen, Permanent Repairs Still to be Made

Pulaski County’s courtroom will soon reopen, after safety complaints about falling ceiling pieces had it closed for the past few weeks.

Judge Michael Shurn told the county council Monday that the county’s maintenance department has knocked down the pieces that were hanging. “I’m still going to block off the far side just to be safe, but the courtroom will be open,” he said. “I mean, I don’t think there’s anything we can do right now about the carpet. I’ve had maintenance look at that. That’s going to be in his budget for next year to completely do that, and we’re going to have to make it ADA-compliant.”

He adds the carpet will require a bit of work. “The carpet is pulled,” he said. “You can’t stretch it, I guess. You can’t really take it up. It’s glued down. It’s going to be a mess until next year.”

Actual repairs to the courtroom ceiling will have to wait until the exterior of the courthouse is fixed. The falling ceiling was one of several complaints about the courthouse recently filed with the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
