Angela Osterman Meyer, Ph.D., an astronomy instructor at the Culver Academies, will present a solar eclipse program on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 10:30 a.m. and noon ET at the Culver-Union Township Public Library. The library staff will also distribute solar eclipse glasses during her presentations.
Do not miss the chance learn how to Capture Solar Eclipse using Mobile Camera so you will have an unforgettable moment save on your phone and social media.
Meyer will have information on how the eclipse occurs. She warns residents to not stare into the sky during the eclipse. Conventional sunglasses will not offer adequate protection. She offers the advice of constructing pinhole cameras or use Ritz crackers held in front of a white postcard to watch the image of the eclipse.
The event will be televised on NASA’s website at www.nasa.gov/eclipse.
The moon is expected to pass in front of the sun as it crosses from the northwest to the southeast across North America on Monday, Aug. 21. The eclipse will begin at 1 p.m. and last until 3:45 p.m. ET. Meyer says Culver will experience 87 percent totality regarding darkness at 2:22 p.m. ET.
If you miss Monday’s eclipse, the next solar eclipse that crosses over North America will be on Apr. 8, 2024 and it is expected to reach 100 percent totality in the Indianapolis metropolitan area while Culver will experience 98 percent totality.
