Funding Ready for Knox Community Center Renovations

Funding is in place for the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center renovation project.

Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston told the city council Tuesday that the bonds have been sold, and the proceeds have been deposited into accounts at First National Bank of Monterey. “It’s handled a little bit differently than our normal way of doing business,” he explained. “As the bills come in as the claims are made, I’ll sign those and send them to the bank, and then the bank will pay those.”

He said the money was placed into two separate bank accounts. “One’s a construction account,” he explained. “The other one was a bond issuance expense account, which would pay Umbaugh and Ice Miller, and they have both been paid already. The financing came out a little cheaper than what the estimate was, so the little bit of money that’s left in that bond issuance expense account, at the end of a year, if it’s not used, will go into the construction account, also.”

The upgrades will include a new heating and cooling system, as well as a new roof. Mayor Dennis Estok expects work to start the first or second week of September. “The HVAC contractor and the roofer are going to coordinate,” Estok said. “So they’ll both be ready at that time to start.”

The city’s also considering repairing some of the building’s windows. Houston said a local contractor was scheduled to come out and look at the windows this week.
