The La Porte City Police Department is joining 220 Indiana law enforcement agencies in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
Officers will be out in full force from mid-August through the Labor Day weekend in September targeting impaired drivers. They will increase sobriety checkpoints, roving patrols and saturation patrols.
It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In Indiana, drivers under 21 with a (BAC) of .02 or higher are subject to fines and a license suspension for up to one year.
If you see an impaired driver, police urge you to safely pull off to the side of the road away from the vehicle and call 911. An impaired driver usually swerves, weaves or drifts all over the road and drives at a slow speed. A drunk driver also makes wide turns, brakes erratically, responds slowly to traffic signals, comes close to striking objects or vehicles, and drives on the wrong side of the road.
Designate a sober driver if you plan on drinking.
The Indiana law enforcement agencies have participated in the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign over more than 20 years. Overtime patrols are supported with federal highway safety funds administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
