A LaPorte County man was trapped under an SUV for roughly 45 minutes Thursday afternoon, after it reportedly rolled away from the motor home it was attached to. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 12:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of North 600 West, near Michigan City.

Deputies say Kenneth “Ike” Edson, 73, and his wife Theresa were trying to unhook a GMC Envoy from the rear of a motor home, when the SUV, which was left in neutral, began to roll backward. Police say Edson tried to get in the vehicle and put it in gear, but it kept rolling down his driveway and across County Road 600 West, and continued rolling for about 150 feet.

It finally ended up in a ditch on the east side of the road, with Edson ending up underneath it, according to police. Firefighters from the Coolspring, Springfield, and Center township fire departments used airbags to lift the SUV, while a wrecker was used to help stabilize it.

It reportedly took them about 25 minutes to free Edson. He was treated at the scene for injuries to his leg, abdomen, and head by LaPorte County EMS. Edson was then airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
