The coroner’s pay will be discussed at the Sept. 18 meeting of the Starke County Commissioners as Coroner Dannie Hoffer is also asking for an increase for his deputies.
The commissioners were prepared to present an increase in pay for the coroner in 2018, but when Hoffer asked about an increase for his deputies next year the commissioners decided to take a step back and research the request before making any formal offer.
He explained that the chief deputy and deputy coroners make $75 a call. One of the deputies always travels with the coroner to the scene to aid in the investigation and for lifting assistance. They also respond in case the coroner is unable to make it to the scene. The commissioners will come back with a recommendation at their next meeting.
Hoffer said money is running out of his budget to pay his deputies and his operating budget may be out of funds by December. The commissioners urged Hoffer to discuss the issue with the council on Sept. 18 and they could meet in joint session to talk about the entire matter.
