La Porte Police, Bomb Squad Investigate Reported Explosive Device at Residence

La Porte Police and the Porter County Bomb Squad reportedly found an explosive device at a residence in the 700 block of F. St., in La Porte late Wednesday afternoon.

La Porte police detectives were able to secure a search warrant after police received information about a person in possession of explosive material at the home. Officers from the La Porte City Police Department and the La Porte County Emergency Response Team took Eric R. Weiler into custody without incident.

The Porter County Bomb Squad was called to the scene and reportedly found an explosive device inside the home. The bomb squad disposed of the device.

The incident remains under investigation with the La Porte City Police Department.

Weiler, 44, faces a preliminary charge of attempted placement of a destructive device or explosive, a Level 2 felony. He is being held in the La Porte County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The La Porte Police Department received additional assistance by the La Porte County Drug Task Force, La Porte County Sheriff Department, FBI, La Porte Fire Department, and La Porte County EMS.
