La Porte Police Department Participates in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign resulted in 18 citations and 7 arrests by the La Porte Police Department over a 25-day-period. Approximately 220 law-enforcement agencies across the state had overtime patrols supported through federal highway safety funds administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

La Porte Police Captain Pat Hemphill said these extra enforcement efforts help save the lives of impaired drivers, their passengers and others out on the road. He stated that officers in the La Porte Police Department are committed year-round to keeping roads as safe as possible.

Nationally, it is Illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. In Indiana, drivers under 21 with a BAC of .02 or higher are subject to fines and a license suspension for up to a year. A Driving Under the Influence arrest means going to jail and losing your license.

If the dangers and consequences don’t scare you enough, maybe the cost will. The average DUI cost is about $10,000 including car towing and repairs, attorney fees, fines, court costs, lost work hours and other immense expenses. That’s not to mention the emotional cost of potentially injuring or murdering others on the road.

There is nothing wrong with adults, 21 and over, enjoying a few drinks but with all of the alternative options out there today for getting home safely, there is absolutely no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired. It not only endangers you but also everyone else around you.

Law-enforcement officials have a few suggestions of how to consume alcohol safely and responsibly. If you’re going out, arrange for there to be a designated sober driver or utilize public transportation, taxis or ride sharing apps rather than driving yourself. Download the ‘SaferRide’ mobile app for Androids and iPhones. This simple app allows individuals to call a taxi or a friend and identify their location for pick-up.

Try celebrating at home or in a place where you can safely stay until sobriety returns. If you’re throwing a party, be sure to provide non-alcoholic drink options and plenty of food. Take the keys away from any intoxicated friends or family attempting to get behind the wheel. Absolutely never provide alcohol to minors or pressure anyone who has expressed no interest in drinking.

If you’re on the road and spot someone you expect to be driving under the influence, pull off the road away from the vehicle and contact police immediately.
