In the Winamac Town Council meeting earlier this week, Town Manager Brad Zellers asked the council to consider changing the golf cart registration policy. The current policy requires individuals to register every two years. Zellers proposed bringing that down to one year.
Zellers said that a change to registration procedures where stickers are issued annually would help the town keep track of who is registered correctly.
“We would have a different color for each year, like you’d have on your car so everybody could tell if they’re registered because right now we have a few that aren’t registered or aren’t registered proper.” Zellers told council members, “It’d be $25 dollars, instead of $50 now for two years so that’s the same, however, we could probably keep better control on it.”
Council President Tom Murray questioned what would happen to the individuals who just registered for two years under the current policy. Zellers said those individuals would be permitted to wait until their registration is up but anyone coming in to renew or register for the first time would be subject to the 1-year policy. If approved, the change would take place on January 1st of 2018.
The council members briefly discussed issues with insurance policies being canceled after registration and people registering a vehicle and then selling it to someone else. Before a change like this can be made, it has to be published for the public to see. The council members agreed to look over the ordinance and re-visit the issue at the next town council meeting.
