Man Faces Felony Charges, Following Friday Manhunt in Rural LaPorte County

Charges have been announced against a man who reportedly led police on an hours-long manhunt in rural LaPorte County Friday. Sheriff’s deputies say Charles Appleberry, 26, was captured Friday morning, after a resident reported seeing him in a field on County Road 800 West. That was nearly nine hours after a homeowner confronted Appleberry during what police are calling the burglary of a pole barn.

Following testimony from detectives, LaPorte Circuit Judge Thomas Alevizos issued two warrants, charging Appleberry with Burglary as a Level 2 felony and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon as a Level 4 Felony. Detectives believe Appleberry is connected to about 100 thefts and burglaries over the past six months.
