Eastern Pulaski School Board members approved the 2018-2019 school calendar when they met Monday night.
Superintendent Dan Foster said it is fairly similar to this year’s calendar with the one big difference being the length of fall break. Foster explained that in the past, for fall break in the month of October they only allowed for Monday and Friday off. Adjustments were made to the 18-19 calendar and now there is a week-long break in October.
Foster added that a lot of schools have been catching flack recently about starting too early so school board members discussed some of the cons of starting later. He said a major issue with a later start date is that students would have finish out the first semester after winter break.
“If we have to finish the second semester after Christmas break, what does that do to mid-term graduates if they have to come back for two or three weeks and then they’re done, what does that do if they wanted to start college in January?”
He said another problem has to do with single-semester classes at the high school level. Starting later could throw off the balance of the two semesters.
