LaPorte County Police have arrested a Gary man, following a suspected burglary at a gas station. Shortly before midnight Tuesday night, officers were called to the Family Express station at the intersection of State Road 2 and County Road 500 West. Police say someone had gotten in and taken numerous cigarette cartons.
A short time later, officers were called to the A&A gas station in Westville for an active alarm. Police say no one was able to get in the business, but the suspect on the security footage matched that of the previous incident.
Deputies say they found the suspect vehicle in Wanatah and pulled it over. The driver, Erodney L. Coffey, 41, was arrested on an unrelated traffic offense, according to police. But they say they saw evidence in the car linking the driver to the burglaries, and on Thursday, officers were able to get warrants for burglary and attempted burglary. Detectives reportedly served both warrants on Coffey while he was still in the LaPorte County Jail.
