Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners on Monday that it was an eventful, snowy end to 2017.
“We had 14 plow events in December,” said Ritzler. “We’ve had 9.7 inches of show which is less than last year in November and December. Plow hours so far total 1,800. We’ve cleared 35,193 miles. That’s at 18.72 mph.”
He added that the salt supply seems to be in good standing.
“We used a lot more salt and sand this November and December because of the cold and lack of thawing. It’s still within our budgeted totals, but it’s significantly more than last year. Everything is going pretty well – although we had a few trucks go down today.”
Ritzler included statistics going back as far as November/December in 2013 and the number of plow hours, plow hours per driver, miles cleared, salt used, and sand used has increased across the board with this season showing the highest numbers.
