Winamac High School students have the chance to learn some valuable career skills while helping the school’s athletic department. Athletic Director Bill Ball discussed the school’s new Athletic Internship Course with the Eastern Pulaski School Board Monday.
He said the class is offered for credit, for high school juniors and seniors. The coursework involves a variety of skills.
For example, Ball said students are responsible for maintaining the athletic website. That includes writing articles, posting pictures, and even coming up with trivia questions. The students also design the programs for football and basketball games.
The interns learn some business skills by maintaining the concession inventory and ordering supplies. Ball said their final exam involved calculating the profit margin for various athletic events and concession stand offerings, as well as researching new ideas. He said Winamac’s first Athletic Internship Course had seven students, with more planning to take it next year.
