Some Winamac High School students will soon get some firsthand science lessons with a pair of upcoming field trips. Chemistry II and Environmental Science students will be visiting the Cook Nuclear Plant in Stevensville, Michigan.
Superintendent Dan Foster says the trip was approved by the school board Monday. “Mrs. [Emily] Hintz – her first year teaching here, I believe she taught at North Judson last year, actually – was kind of looking for something to break up the winter doldrums before spring break and stuff,” Foster explains. “So she was looking for a trip, and being as it is out of state, the board did have to give approval for that. That should be a pretty neat trip, after I got looking at it and went to their website and stuff. It’s pretty cool.”
The school board also approved Jeremy Wegner’s annual request to take his Physics class to the Fermi National Accelerator in Batavia, Illinois. “Mr. Wegner’s also the teacher that just last month was invited by Notre Dame to go with a group from Notre Dame, and actually do some teaching to colleges and high schools in Mexico how to teach physics, and some of the activities that they’re doing,” Foster adds. “So a really neat experience for him, and any time he can do something like that, he brings it back to our kids and it’s a really neat opportunity for him and our students.”
Both of the approved field trips will take place next month.
