Proposed Housing Developments Discussed with Culver School Board

The Culver Community Schools Corporation is keeping an eye on a proposed housing development. A 71-acre development is planned for the area just west of the school corporation’s property, on the east side of State Road 17.

Superintendent Karen Shuman says she discussed the potential new housing with the school board Monday. “They’re looking for citizen input, and as a school corporation, we would love to increase our enrollment,” she says. “Hopefully, new housing would increase our enrollment, so there’s some support to attend that town hall meeting.”

The developer is currently in the process of adjusting the plan. During a public hearing before the Culver Town Council last month, several residents said they support the new housing, but they opposed a part of the plan that would allow a gas station to be built at the corner of State Roads 17 and 10. The developer has asked the town to rezone the site as a Planned Unit Development and annex it into the town limits.

Meanwhile, Culver is also working on the Sand Hill Farms workforce housing development. It will add 24 apartments to West Jefferson Street.
