West Central School Board Approves Handbook Changes

The West Central School Board reviewed a few handbook policy changes recently presented by the building principals, according to Superintendent Don Street.

“Our elementary recommended a revision of the homework policy to have a maximum number of minutes per grade level,” said Street. “For example, kindergarten would be five minutes, first grade 10 minutes, second grade 20 minutes, third grade 30 minutes, fourth grade 40 minutes, and fifth grade 50 minutes. We do believe that homework is very important and a necessity for our students.”

Street added that changes were made to the tobacco free environment policy that would match the board’s policy.

More changes were presented at the high school level.

“A few changes were recommended concerning in-school suspension, time that the students need to be at school in order to participate in athletics that evening, and our weighted grade policy to include AP courses and honors courses. Our previous document had information in it that spelled out all of the AP courses and those courses change from year-to-year depending upon student needs and with distance learning and online courses as well.”

All policies were approved as presented.
