Oregon-Davis School Board Removes eLearning Days from School Calendar

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is doing away with eLearning days. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says the decision was made after talking to teachers, parents, and community members. “We firmly believe we want students here at school to get direct instruction, and there’s really no research out there that supports students’ achievement will increase with eLearning days,” he says.

In many school local schools, eLearning days are used to allow students to work on assignments from home, on days when regular classes are cancelled due to weather. Oregon-Davis had taken a slightly different approach, giving students the day off if class was cancelled, but then scheduling an eLearning makeup day later. There were also occasional planned eLearning days.

Harman says the school board voted Monday to remove all of those from the next two years’ school calendars. “We originally had two planned eLearning days,” he explains. “Instead of having a planned eLearning day where students stayed home and teachers reported, we’re bringing our students here. We decided we want our students in school. We want to feed them lunch. We want our students to be in direct contact with our teachers.”

Additionally, eLearning makeup days that were built into the calendars were replaced with in-class makeup days.
