The Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation will not be financially responsible for issues with the high school gym floor.
Superintendent Dan Foster says the problem began when the floor was installed in 2016. “Two batches of stain did not work properly in the three-point arcs,” he explains, “and we were either hosting a volleyball regional or sectional, so we had to get the gym. So they decided, we all agree, that ‘We’ll just leave it without the extra stain this year. They’ll come back in the summer. Hopefully, the stain will be correct by then. They’ll get everything done. They’ll refinish the floor again and add a year warranty.’ So that would’ve been the summer of ’17.”
But he says the problem only got worse. “By about November, in the three-point arcs where the stain was, it started chipping very badly, and by the end of the basketball season, it looks awful.”
Foster says the flooring company blamed the issue on the school corporation and wanted $26,000 to fix it. The school rejected the claim, and the flooring company hired an independent consultant from the Maple Floor Manufacturers Association. “He was here in early June and completed his report, and basically found that there is no fault of the school,” Foster says.
The company will now sand down the three-point arcs, strip the wood, reseal the floor, and repaint the game lines with the help from the wooden floors dublin contractors. “And this time, we’re probably just going to leave the stain off of it, unfortunately,” Foster says. “So it’s been frustrating.”
Work is expected to start this weekend.
